Abstract

This study on “An Analytical Study of the Counseling Program in Schools applying Buddhist Teaching” had 3 objectives: 1) Buddhist teaching of counseling appeared in the Theravada Buddhist Text; 2) techniques of counseling the juvenile by applying Buddhist teaching in Thai society now and 3) analyze the techniques of counseling for students applying Buddhist teaching. This study was a documentary research which had been gathered the data from the Buddhist scripture of the Three Baskets, commentaries, sub-commentaries and textbooks, including from other related documents and researches.  The collected data were studied and analyzed in order to submit its conclusion in description and the results of this study revealed as follows:

1. The Buddhist teaching of counseling appeared in the Theravada Buddhist Text, it showed that there were many approaches of counseling, but the two most important were: 1) The principle of Samatha-kammatthana (tranquility development) emphasized on the counseled person to practice his mind to be calm, strong and had concentration to face any problems or suffering by using his wisdom and 2) The principle of Vipassana-kammatthana (insight development) emphasized on the counseled person to consider things according to the truth, practicing to create wisdom and awareness to know and realize of his own thinking as mentioned in the principle of Sammaditthi (Right Understanding) without the cover of the power of impurities.

We could see that the two ways of counseling above had the same objective on human development as a holistic pattern without the separation of the components between the body and the mind and such development had to be done according to individual characteristic and individual difference, thus, Lord Buddha used Carita (the six types of characteristic behavior) to be the most important component of the counseling.

2. Techniques of counseling the juvenile by applying Buddhist teaching in Thai society now, it found that they aimed to develop the juvenile’s wisdom and awareness to the right direction of daily-living, especially, to have the right state of consciousness in morality which had been the best norm for Buddhist people, the Buddhist teaching was the right direction to control the behavior of the body, the words and the mind by using the principle of Ariyasacca (the Four Nobles Truths) be the most important key theory of counseling applying to solve the problems of all human beings related to the 4 factors which could sustain the body to its existence and to develop as a holistic pattern between the body and the mind as the principle of Bhavana 4 (development) to meet the goal which was the happiness of all mankind.

3. Analyzed the techniques of counseling for students applying Buddhist teaching, it revealed that the counselors consisting of the monks, the parents, the guardians and the teachers needed to behave themselves correctly as the principle of good relationship within both the family and the society, especially, be good patterns for their students according to the principle of 6 directions that pointed out on the right way of daily-living concerning their education, careers, and association with good friends without doing the wrong things or out of morality which was the basis norm of ethics for human beings. Developing to identify the growth of human’s body, mind, emotion, society, wisdom and awareness could be done by using the principle of the Sikkhattaya (the Threefold Learning: morality, concentration and wisdom) to solve the problems of our lives and be the highest aim for human beings which were for our own benefits, the others’ and benefits for both sides helping us to step forward and to achieve those three benefits finally.
